How this was calculated
- 25% off $80.00: $80.00 ร (1 โ 0.25) = $60.00 (you save $20.00).
Amounts are rounded to the cent for display; stores may round each step differently at the register.
How this discount calculator works
A discount is a percentage taken off a price. To find the sale price, multiply the original price by the share you still pay: sale price = price ร (1 โ discount รท 100). The savings are the difference. This discount calculator (it doubles as a percent off calculator) does that as you type, lists the price at the common sale percentages, and can stack a second discount or add sales tax on top.
It also works backwards. Choose "Percent off" to find the discount from a tag that shows both prices, or "Original price" to find what something cost before the sale.
Worked examples
25% off $80: you pay 75% of the price, $80 ร 0.75 = $60, and save $20. With 8.25% sales tax on the sale price, the register total is $60 ร 1.0825 = $64.95.
Stacked discounts: a $100 jacket is 20% off and you have a coupon for an extra 10% off. The coupon applies to the reduced price, so you pay $100 ร 0.8 ร 0.9 = $72, a total of 28% off, not 30%. The order of the two discounts does not matter; the result is the same either way.
Finding the percent off: a $50 item is marked down to $35. You save $15, and $15 รท $50 = 30% off. Finding the original price: if $60 is the price after 25% off, the original was $60 รท 0.75 = $80.
Mental math for percent off
10% off is the price with the decimal point moved one place left: 10% of $80 is $8. Build other discounts from that: 20% is double it ($16), 5% is half of it ($4), 25% is a quarter of the price ($20), and 15% is 10% plus 5% ($12). For the sale price, subtract from the original, or multiply by what is left (30% off means pay 70%).
Common mistakes
- Adding stacked discounts. "50% off plus an extra 20% off" is 60% off, not 70%.
- Reversing a discount with the same percent. If a price drops 20% and then rises 20%, it does not return to where it started: $100 โ $80 โ $96. To undo a 20% discount you need a 25% increase.
- Forgetting tax. The shelf price in most US states does not include sales tax, so the amount you pay at checkout is higher than the sale price.
When the result is misleading
"Up to 70% off" means some items are 70% off, not all. Some stores calculate a coupon on the original price rather than the sale price, and some states tax manufacturer coupons on the pre-coupon price. Check the receipt if the total seems off by a few cents; rounding happens at each step at the register. For comparing two ratios or package sizes, try the ratio calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percent off?
Multiply the price by the discount as a decimal and subtract it, or multiply by (1 โ discount). 25% off $80 is $80 ร 0.75 = $60, a saving of $20.
Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The extra 10% comes off the already-reduced price, so you pay 0.8 ร 0.9 = 72% of the original, which is 28% off. On a $100 item that is $72 instead of $70.
How do I find the percent off from the original and sale price?
Percent off = (original โ sale) รท original ร 100. A $50 item on sale for $35 is (50 โ 35) รท 50 = 30% off.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 โ discount). If something costs $60 after 25% off, the original price was $60 รท 0.75 = $80.
Is sales tax charged on the original or the discounted price?
In most US states, sales tax is charged on the price you actually pay after store discounts. Manufacturer coupons are sometimes taxed on the pre-coupon price, depending on the state.
