How the strikethrough text generator works
A strikethrough text generator does not use any formatting. It inserts a Unicode "combining long stroke overlay" (U+0336) after every letter, and the font draws that stroke straight through the character in front of it. The result is a plain string of text, so it survives being pasted into Instagram and TikTok bios, tweets, Discord names, Facebook comments, email subject lines and anywhere else that only accepts text. Type above, press Copy on the S̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶t̶h̶r̶o̶u̶g̶h̶ row, and paste.
The same trick gives you the other featured rows: U+0338 draws a diagonal slash (S̸l̸a̸s̸h̸e̸d̸), and U+0332 draws a low line for U̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲. A double underline (U+0333) is further down the list.
Strikethrough vs. platform markdown
Some apps already support strikethrough through markdown, and when they do, that version looks cleaner: Discord, Reddit, Slack and WhatsApp use ~~text~~ or ~text~, and the formatting is applied by the app with a perfectly even line. The Unicode version from this tool is for everywhere markdown is not available: bios, display names, Instagram captions, YouTube comments, Twitter/X posts and SMS. It also works inside places that do support markdown when you want the line to show up even after the text is copied somewhere else.
Why the line sometimes looks broken
Each stroke is drawn by the font, one character at a time, so the look depends on the font. On most phones the strokes join into a continuous line; on a few desktop fonts the segments are slightly offset and look dashed. The line is drawn only through letters, digits and punctuation; spaces are left alone so words stay separated. If you want a continuous line across spaces, type an underscore or a non-breaking space between words before converting. Wide characters such as emoji may show the stroke off to one side, so it is best to convert the words and add emoji afterward.
Character counts and accessibility
- It doubles the length. Each letter gets one extra invisible character. A 10-letter word becomes 20 characters, which matters for a 150-character bio or a 280-character tweet.
- Screen readers ignore the strike. They read the letters normally and skip the overlay, so a crossed-out price or a sarcastic ~~joke~~ loses its meaning for blind users. Add the meaning in words if it matters.
- Search still works. Unlike the fancy-letter styles, the underlying letters are unchanged, so a search for "sale" can still match "s̶a̶l̶e̶" on platforms that normalize text, though not all do.
Frequently asked questions
›How does the strikethrough work without formatting?
A Unicode combining long stroke overlay (U+0336) is inserted after each letter, and the font draws a line through the character before it. The result is plain text that survives copy and paste.
›Is this better than ~~text~~ in Discord or Reddit?
On platforms with markdown (Discord, Reddit, Slack, WhatsApp) the built-in version looks cleaner. Use Unicode strikethrough where there is no formatting: bios, Instagram captions, tweets, YouTube comments and SMS.
›Why does the line look dashed on my computer?
Each stroke is drawn by the font one character at a time. Most phone fonts join them into a continuous line; a few desktop fonts offset the segments slightly.
›Does strikethrough text count double against character limits?
Yes. Every letter gets one extra combining character, so a 10-letter word becomes 20 characters. Spaces are not marked.
›Can screen readers tell the text is crossed out?
No. They read the letters normally and skip the overlay, so a crossed-out price or joke loses its meaning for blind users. Add the meaning in words if it matters.
