What is time and a half?
Time and a half is your regular hourly wage multiplied by 1.5. It is the minimum overtime rate under federal law for non-exempt workers who work more than 40 hours in a workweek. A quick way to do it in your head: take half of your wage and add it back. Half of $18 is $9, so time and a half is $27.
Time and a half vs double time
Double time is twice the regular wage. Federal law does not require it, but California does after 12 hours in a day (and after 8 hours on the seventh consecutive workday), and many union contracts and employers pay it for holidays. Some holiday policies pay double time and a half (2.5×): your regular pay for the day plus time and a half for working it.
What your overtime hours pay
Multiply the time-and-a-half rate by the overtime hours. Eight overtime hours at $20 an hour pay 8 × $30 = $240, which is $80 more than the same hours at straight time.
