Annual$52,000.00$40,560.00
How this was calculated
  1. Paid weeks = 52 − 0 unpaid = 52.
  2. Hours worked per year: 40 hours × 52 paid weeks = 2,080 hours a year.
  3. Hourly rate = salary ÷ hours = $52,000.00 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00.
  4. Other periods: weekly = hourly × 40 h; daily = weekly ÷ 5; biweekly = weekly × 2; monthly = annual ÷ 12; semimonthly = annual ÷ 24.
  5. Estimated take-home = gross × (1 − 22%) = $52,000.00 × 0.78 = $40,560.00 a year.

Take-home pay uses a single flat percentage you choose; real withholding depends on filing status, state, pre-tax deductions and benefits. This is an estimate, not tax or financial advice.

How the salary to hourly calculator works

A salary to hourly conversion is one division: annual salary ÷ hours worked per year. The number of hours is where the assumptions hide. The calculator multiplies your hours per week by the weeks you are paid for, which is 52 for most salaried jobs because vacation is paid. If you are comparing against a contract or hourly job where time off is unpaid, enter those unpaid weeks and the hourly figure rises because the same money is spread over fewer hours.

A full-time year is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, which is why a quick mental shortcut works: hourly rate ≈ salary ÷ 2,000, or salary ≈ hourly × 2,000. $25 an hour is about $50,000 a year; the exact figure at 2,080 hours is $52,000. The reverse direction (hourly to salary) multiplies instead of dividing and gives the same table of weekly, biweekly, semimonthly and monthly amounts.

Worked example

Take a $65,000 salary at 40 hours a week and 52 weeks. That is 2,080 hours, so $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 an hour, $1,250 a week, $2,500 biweekly and $5,416.67 a month. Now suppose you actually work 50 hours a week. Your real hourly rate drops to $25.00, a 20% pay cut nobody told you about. That comparison is the main reason to run the numbers before accepting a salaried role that replaces an hourly one with overtime.

Biweekly, semimonthly and monthly pay

Biweekly means 26 paychecks a year (every other week); semimonthly means 24 (usually the 15th and the last day of the month). Both add up to the same annual salary, but the biweekly check is smaller because there are more of them: $52,000 is $2,000 biweekly and $2,166.67 semimonthly. Two months a year contain three biweekly paydays, which is why budgeting by month on a biweekly schedule feels off.

Take-home pay is an estimate

The second column of the table applies one flat percentage to every period. Real withholding is not flat: a portion of your income is taxed at 10%, the next slice at 12%, and so on, then Social Security and Medicare (7.65% combined for employees up to the Social Security wage base), then state and local tax, minus pre-tax items like 401(k) contributions and health premiums. An effective rate of 20–25% is typical for a single filer earning $50,000–$80,000 in a state with income tax, but check a pay stub for your actual percentage and enter that instead.

Common mistakes

Frequently asked questions

›How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so $52,000 a year is $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour.

›How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly wage by hours per week and weeks per year. $25 an hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $52,000. A quick estimate is hourly rate × 2,000.

›Should I use 52 or 50 weeks?

Use 52 if your vacation is paid, which is the case for most salaried jobs. Use fewer weeks (or enter unpaid weeks) if you are hourly and do not get paid for time off.

›What is $20 an hour annually?

$41,600 a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or $40,000 with two unpaid weeks off. That is $800 a week, $1,600 biweekly and about $3,467 a month before taxes.

›How accurate is the take-home estimate?

It applies one flat percentage you choose, so it is only a rough guide. Real withholding depends on federal brackets, state tax, Social Security and Medicare (7.65%), and pre-tax deductions. Check a pay stub for your actual effective rate.
