How this was calculated
- Pace = time ÷ distance = 25:00 ÷ 5 km = 5:00 per km.
- 1 mile = 1.609344 km, so 5:00 per km is 8:03 per mile.
How this pace calculator works
Pace, time and distance are linked by one relationship: pace = time ÷ distance. Give this pace calculator any two and it finds the third. Enter a distance and your finish time to get your pace per mile and per kilometer; enter a distance and a target pace to see the finish time; or enter a time and a pace to see how far you will run. Below the result, a table projects your finish time for a mile, 5K, 10K, 15K, 10 miles, half marathon and marathon at the same pace.
Worked examples
A 5K in 25:00 is 25 minutes ÷ 5 km = 5:00 per kilometer. Because a mile is 1.609344 km, that is 5:00 × 1.609344 = 8:03 per mile, or a speed of 12 km/h (7.46 mph). Running 10 miles at 9:00 per mile takes 90 minutes, 1:30:00. And holding 8:00 per mile for a marathon (26.2188 miles, or 42.195 km) gives a finish of 3:29:45.
Pace in minutes per mile or per kilometer
Runners in the US usually quote pace per mile and almost everyone else per kilometer. To convert, multiply a per-kilometer pace by 1.609344 to get the per-mile pace, or divide by 1.609344 to go the other way. A rough shortcut: 6:00 per km is about 9:40 per mile, and 10:00 per mile is about 6:13 per km. Switch the unit above and every result updates.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up units. A 5:00 pace per kilometer is much faster than 5:00 per mile. Check the unit before comparing with a training plan.
- Expecting the pace to hold. The race table assumes an even pace for the whole distance. Most runners slow down in the second half of a marathon, so a projection from a 5K pace is optimistic. A pace from a recent run of similar length is a better guide.
- Using GPS distance as exact. Watches often read a little long on twisty routes, which makes your pace look faster than it was. Race courses are measured to 42.195 km for a marathon and 21.0975 km for a half.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate running pace?
Divide your time by your distance. A 5K (5 km) in 25:00 is 25 minutes ÷ 5 km = 5:00 per kilometer, which is 8:03 per mile.
How do you convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the pace per kilometer by 1.609344. 5:00 per km × 1.609344 = 8:03 per mile. To go the other way, divide by 1.609344.
What pace is a 4-hour marathon?
9:09 per mile or 5:41 per kilometer, based on 4 hours over 42.195 km (26.2188 miles).
What is a 10 minute mile in km/h?
A 10:00 per mile pace is 6 mph, which is 9.66 km/h, or 6:13 per kilometer.
How long does it take to run 10 miles at a 9 minute pace?
1 hour 30 minutes: 10 miles × 9 minutes per mile = 90 minutes.
