How to convert inches to cm
To convert inches to cm, multiply by 2.54. To convert cm to inches, divide by 2.54. The factor is exact by definition: in 1959 the United States and the Commonwealth countries agreed on an international inch of exactly 2.54 centimeters, and the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology lists 1 in = 2.54 cm as an exact relationship in NIST Handbook 44 (Appendix C) and NIST SP 811. A foot is 12 inches, so it is exactly 30.48 cm.
Converting a height in feet and inches
Heights take one extra step. Turn the whole height into inches first (feet × 12, plus the inches), then multiply by 2.54. For 5 ft 7 in: 5 × 12 = 60, plus 7 is 67 inches, and 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm. Six feet is 72 inches, or 182.88 cm. Going the other way, divide centimeters by 2.54 to get inches, then divide by 12: the whole number is feet and the remainder is inches. The cm to feet converter does exactly that and rounds the inches for you.
Worked examples
5 inches to cm: 5 × 2.54 = 12.7 cm. 30 cm to inches: 30 ÷ 2.54 = 11.81 in, which on a tape measure is just under 11 13/16 in. A 55-inch TV: 55 × 2.54 = 139.7 cm, measured on the diagonal. US Letter paper is 8.5 × 11 in, or 21.59 × 27.94 cm; A4 is 21 × 29.7 cm, so the two sizes are close but not interchangeable.
Quick mental math
Treat an inch as 2.5 cm and a centimeter as 0.4 in. 8 in ≈ 20 cm (exact: 20.32) and 50 cm ≈ 20 in (exact: 19.69). The shortcut is 1.6% off, which is fine for a rough size but adds up over long lengths: 100 inches estimated this way is 250 cm instead of 254 cm.
Common mistakes
- Reading 5.7 feet as 5 ft 7 in. 5.7 ft is a decimal: 0.7 × 12 = 8.4 in, so 5.7 ft is 5 ft 8.4 in (173.74 cm). 5 ft 7 in is 5.58 ft.
- Dividing when you should multiply. Centimeters are smaller, so the cm number is always about 2.5 times bigger than the inch number.
- Rounding too early in a height. Convert the total inches in one go; rounding the feet part to 152 cm and the inches separately can put you a centimeter off.
