How the random animal generator works

This random animal generator draws from a list of more than 300 animals grouped into six types: mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects and amphibians. Choose a type (or leave it on "All animals"), pick how many you want, and press the button. Every pick is equally likely, and when you ask for several at once the tool shuffles the list and takes the first few, so the same animal never appears twice in one draw. Roughly a quarter of the animals come with a short, verifiable fact, the kind you can read out to a class or drop into a quiz.

Ways people use it

How the animals are grouped

The six groups follow the everyday classes of vertebrates plus insects. Mammals are warm-blooded animals that feed milk to their young, which includes whales, dolphins and bats. Birds have feathers and lay eggs; all birds are included even if they cannot fly, like the emu and kiwi. Reptiles (snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodilians and the tuatara) have scales and most lay leathery eggs. Fish breathe through gills; the list includes sharks and rays, which are fish even though their skeletons are cartilage, and the electric eel, which is a knifefish rather than a true eel. Insects have six legs and three body sections; spiders and crabs are not insects and are not on the list. Amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders, newts and the legless caecilians) start life in water and usually move to land.

About the facts

Each fact is a single widely reported claim, phrased carefully: "the fastest land animal" rather than a precise speed that varies by study, and "up to about" where sizes depend on the individual. They are meant as conversation starters, not citations. If you are writing a report, confirm the detail with an encyclopedia or a zoo website, since records (the longest snake, the oldest tortoise) change as new animals are measured.

Frequently asked questions

›How many animals are in the generator?

More than 300, grouped into six types: mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects and amphibians. About a quarter include a one-line fact.

›Can I get only birds or only reptiles?

Yes. Choose a type from the dropdown; the hint shows how many animals are in that group. 'All animals' draws from the whole list.

›Can the same animal appear twice in one draw?

No. When you ask for several animals the list is shuffled and the first few are taken, so each animal appears at most once per draw.

›Are sharks fish and are spiders insects?

Sharks and rays are fish (with cartilage skeletons) and are included under Fish. Spiders have eight legs and are arachnids, not insects, so they are not on the list.

›Are the animal facts accurate?

Each fact is a widely reported claim phrased cautiously ('up to about', 'one of the largest'). They are conversation starters; confirm details with an encyclopedia for schoolwork.
