How this was calculated
  1. Distance = steps × stride = 10,000 × 27.26 in = 272,580 in
  2. Miles = 272,580 ÷ 63,360 in per mile = 4.302 mi
  3. Kilometers = 4.302 × 1.609344 = 6.924 km

How this steps to miles calculator works

Distance is the number of steps multiplied by the length of one step, your stride. This steps to miles calculator takes your step count and either a stride length you measured or an estimate from your height, then divides by 63,360, the number of inches in a mile, to get miles. It also shows kilometers, feet and a table of common step counts at your stride.

Estimating your stride from your height

If you do not know your stride, a common rule of thumb is stride ≈ 0.413 × height for women and 0.415 × height for men. A woman who is 5 ft 6 in (66 in) has a stride of about 27.3 in, so 10,000 steps cover 272,600 inches, or 4.3 miles (6.9 km). A man who is 5 ft 10 in (70 in) has a stride of about 29.1 in, so 10,000 steps are 4.6 miles (7.4 km). That works out to roughly 2,100 to 2,400 steps per mile.

Measuring your real stride

Walk a known distance, such as 100 feet or the length of a track lap, counting every step. Divide the distance by the step count to get your stride: 100 ft is 1,200 in, so 46 steps means 26.1 in per step. Do it at your normal pace, because strides lengthen as you speed up and shorten on hills, in crowds and when carrying loads. Running strides are much longer than walking strides, so the estimate here is for walking.

How accurate is it?

The height formula is an average, so individual results can differ by 10 percent or more. A phone or watch counts steps from motion and can over- or under-count, for example when pushing a stroller. Treat the result as a good estimate for goals such as 10,000 steps a day. The figure is a convenience rather than a target, and any extra walking is better than none. This calculator gives distance only; the number of calories burned depends on weight and speed as well, and the BMR calculator shows your daily energy needs.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile?

It depends on your stride. A stride of 30 inches gives 2,112 steps per mile (63,360 inches ÷ 30). Most adults take roughly 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile when walking.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

About 4.3 miles (6.9 km) for a woman 5 ft 6 in tall and 4.6 miles (7.4 km) for a man 5 ft 10 in tall, using the height-based stride estimate. At a 30-inch stride it is 4.73 miles.

How do you calculate stride length from height?

A common rule of thumb is stride ≈ 0.413 × height for women and 0.415 × height for men. A height of 66 inches gives a stride of about 27.3 inches for a woman.

How do I measure my own stride length?

Walk a measured distance at your normal pace, count the steps, and divide the distance by the steps. For example, 100 feet in 46 steps is 1,200 in ÷ 46 = 26.1 inches per step.

How do you convert steps to kilometers?

Multiply the steps by the stride in meters and divide by 1,000. 10,000 steps at a 0.76 m stride are 7.6 km. This calculator does the conversion from inches or centimeters for you.
