How the italic text generator works
Most social apps have no italics button, so this italic text generator (or italics generator, if you prefer) uses the next best thing: Unicode's mathematical italic letters. ๐ผ๐ก๐๐๐๐ serif, ๐ช๐ต๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ค sans-serif and ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ are separate characters that live in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, originally added so equations could show variables in italic without any formatting. Because they are characters rather than styling, you can paste them into an Instagram or TikTok bio, a tweet, a Discord name, a LinkedIn post or a YouTube comment and the slant survives.
Serif italic, sans italic and the odd case of โ
The serif version (๐ป๐๐๐๐) looks like italics in a book. The sans-serif version (๐๐ฆ๐ญ๐ญ๐ฐ) matches the system fonts on phones better and is the one to use if you want it to feel native in a bio. Bold italic (๐ฏ๐๐๐๐) stands out most and works well for a name or a headline. One curiosity: the italic lowercase h is U+210E, the Planck constant symbol โ, because it was encoded as a physics symbol years before the rest of the italic alphabet. It looks identical in practice, and this tool uses the correct character so your text matches what other generators produce.
Numbers, punctuation and what stays plain
Unicode did not define italic digits, so 0โ9 stay upright in every italic row. If you need slanted numbers you will not find them anywhere; bold, double-struck, monospace and sans-serif do have digits, so pick one of those styles for a date or a score. Punctuation, spaces, emoji and accented letters such as รฉ or รฑ pass through unchanged, which keeps hashtags and @mentions working (a hashtag made of italic letters will not match the plain one).
Caveats before you paste
- Handles stay plain. Usernames on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X and most games only allow aโz, 0โ9 and underscores. Use italics in the display name or bio instead.
- Screen readers. ๐ is a math symbol, not the letter a, so screen readers tend to spell italic text out letter by letter or skip it. Keep essential information in normal text.
- Old devices show boxes. Any phone or browser from the last decade renders these, but very old systems without a math font show a box or question mark for each letter.
- One character per letter. Italic text costs no extra characters against a bio or tweet limit.
Frequently asked questions
โบHow do I write in italics on Instagram or TikTok?
Neither app has an italics button, but both accept Unicode. Type here, copy the italic row and paste it into your bio, name, caption or comment.
โบWhich italic style should I use?
Sans-serif italic matches phone system fonts and looks the most native. Serif italic looks like a book. Bold italic stands out most and suits a name or headline.
โบWhy are the numbers not italic?
Unicode never defined italic digits, so 0โ9 stay upright. Bold, double-struck, sans-serif and monospace styles do include digits.
โบWhy is the italic h a different character?
Italic lowercase h is U+210E, the Planck constant symbol โ, because it was encoded as a physics symbol before the rest of the italic alphabet. It looks the same and this tool uses it correctly.
โบIs italic Unicode text accessible?
Not very. Screen readers treat ๐ as a math symbol and may read it letter by letter or skip it, so keep essential information in normal text.
