How the days until a date are counted
A days until calculator counts the midnights between today and the date you pick. Today is not counted and the target day is, which matches how people say it out loud: on December 24 there is 1 day until Christmas, not 2. The live countdown underneath goes one step further and counts down to the first second of the target day on your device's clock, so on October 26 it reads 59 days and some hours while the headline says 60 days. Both are correct; they answer slightly different questions.
Pick a date in the past and the same math runs backwards as a days since counter: how long since a birthday, a quit date or the start of a project.
Worked example: 60 days until Christmas
From Monday, October 26, 2026 to Friday, December 25, 2026: the rest of October is 5 days, November has 30 and December contributes 25, so 5 + 30 + 25 = 60 days. That is 8 weeks and 4 days (60 รท 7 = 8 remainder 4), or 1 month and 29 days on the calendar, or 1,440 hours. Of those 60 days, 44 fall on Monday through Friday and 16 on weekends, so 44 business days, before you subtract Thanksgiving or any other day off.
Business days, weeks and months
Business days count Monday to Friday only. Public holidays are deliberately not removed, because they differ by country, state and employer; take them off yourself. Months are counted by calendar month (the 25th to the 25th is one month whatever its length), which is why a span can be 1 month and 29 days but only 60 days long. For counting the days between two arbitrary dates, or adding 90 days to a date, use the date duration calculator.
Holiday countdowns
Fixed holidays such as Christmas, Halloween and the Fourth of July are the same date every year. Others move: Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, Mother's Day the second Sunday in May, and Easter follows the moon. Each quick pick above jumps to the next occurrence, and each holiday has its own page with the rule, the dates for the next few years and a live countdown: Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Father's Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.
When the number can mislead
- Time zones. "Today" comes from your device. Someone in Tokyo is already a day closer to New Year's than someone in Los Angeles.
- Counting both ends. School and hotel countdowns sometimes count today too. Add 1 to the result if yours does.
- Sleeps. Kids counting "sleeps until Christmas" want the same number as the days until: the night of December 24 is the last sleep.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how many days until a date?
Count the midnights between today and the date: the rest of this month, plus every full month in between, plus the day of the target month. From October 26 to December 25 that is 5 + 30 + 25 = 60 days.
Does the count include today?
No. Today is not counted and the target day is, so on December 24 there is 1 day until Christmas. If your countdown should include today, add 1.
Why does the live countdown show one day fewer than the headline?
The headline counts calendar days; the countdown runs to midnight at the start of the target day. At 3 PM on October 26 there are 60 days until December 25 but only 59 days and 9 hours until it begins.
How are business days counted?
Monday through Friday from tomorrow up to and including the target date. Public holidays are not subtracted because they vary by state and employer, so take off any that apply to you.
Can it count days since a date?
Yes. Pick a date in the past and the result switches to days since, with the same weeks, business days and calendar breakdown.
Which time zone does the countdown use?
Your device's clock and time zone. The result is the same for everyone on the same calendar day, but the live countdown reaches zero at local midnight wherever you are.
