JPG to PNG Converter

Convert JPG and JPEG files to lossless PNG, in batches, entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

PNG is lossless: every pixel is copied exactly, so there is no quality setting. Transparency is kept.

How this JPG to PNG converter works

Drop one or more JPG (or JPEG) files above and this JPG to PNG converter decodes each one with your browser's built-in image decoder, draws the pixels onto a canvas and re-encodes them as PNG. The whole job runs in the tab you are looking at. There is no upload, no queue on a server and no link that expires: the PNG is handed straight back to you as a download. Because PNG is a lossless format, the pixels you get out are exactly the pixels your browser decoded from the JPG. Nothing is resampled, sharpened or compressed again.

EXIF orientation is honored, so a phone photo that was shot sideways comes out the right way up instead of rotated. Several files can be converted in one go, and each one gets its own download button plus a "Download all" button that saves them one after another.

When to convert JPG to PNG

Quality, transparency and file size

Converting JPG to PNG never improves quality. JPG compression throws away detail when the file is first saved, and that detail is gone for good; PNG simply preserves whatever is left, perfectly. Expect the PNG to be noticeably bigger, often 3 to 10 times the size of the JPG, because PNG's compression is lossless and photographs have very little repetition for it to squeeze. A 2 MB JPG photo at 4000 × 3000 pixels typically becomes a 15 to 25 MB PNG. For a logo or screenshot the gap is much smaller.

JPG has no transparency, so the PNG you get here is fully opaque. If you need a transparent background, the conversion is the first step; removing the background is a separate edit in an image editor.

Privacy: nothing is uploaded

Most online converters send your image to their server, convert it there, and keep a copy for some period. This one uses the same canvas API that web games and photo editors use, so your files stay on your computer or phone. You can confirm this by switching to airplane mode after the page has loaded: conversion still works. That also makes it quick: a 20-megapixel photo converts in about a second on a recent laptop, with no upload time at all.

Common questions while converting

If a file is rejected, check its extension: .jpeg, .jpe and .jfif are all accepted as JPG. HEIC photos from an iPhone are not JPGs; use the HEIC to PNG converter instead. Very large files (over 50 MB) can run out of memory on phones; on a desktop they usually work. If you want the opposite direction, the PNG to JPG converter has a quality slider and background color picker for the smaller, lossy format.

Frequently asked questions

›Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. PNG keeps exactly the pixels decoded from the JPG, so nothing is lost, but detail the JPG already discarded cannot come back. The benefit is that future edits and saves will not degrade it further.

›Why is the PNG larger than the JPG?

PNG compression is lossless and photographs compress poorly without loss. A 2 MB JPG photo often becomes a 15–25 MB PNG. Screenshots and graphics grow much less.

›Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. Removing a background is a separate edit in an image editor.

›Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion uses your browser's canvas; the files stay on your device and the page works offline once loaded.

›Can I convert JPEG and JFIF files too?

Yes. .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe and .jfif are all the same format and are accepted.
