How to convert cups to pints

1 cup = 0.5 pints. To convert cups to pints, divide by 2 (or multiply by 0.5). A US customary cup is 8 US fluid ounces, about 236.6 ml (nutrition labels use a rounded 240 ml). A US liquid pint is 16 US fluid ounces, about 473.2 ml.

Where this conversion comes up

Cups are used for US recipes and nutrition labels; pints for beer, milk and ice cream in the US. A US pint is exactly 2 cups (16 fl oz), so 6 cups is 3 pints. A UK pint is 20 imperial fl oz, about 2.4 US cups.

Common mistakes

• Multiplying instead of dividing. A pint is larger than a cup, so the number of pints must come out smaller: 2 cups = 1 pt.
• Mixing fluid ounces with weight ounces. A fluid ounce is a volume (29.57 ml); an ounce on a kitchen scale is a weight (28.35 g). A cup of flour is 8 fl oz by volume but only about 4.25 oz by weight.
• Using the imperial (UK) unit. This page uses US measures. An imperial gallon is 4.546 L (20% more than a US gallon), an imperial pint 568 ml and an imperial fluid ounce 28.41 ml.
