Gallons are used for gasoline, milk, paint and fish tanks in the US; pints for beer, milk and ice cream in the US. Multiply by 8: half a gallon is 4 pints and 5 gallons is 40 pints. Imperial gallons also hold 8 (imperial) pints, so the count is the same in the UK even though the sizes differ.
