How to convert kelvins to degrees Celsius
°C = K − 273.15. Subtract 273.15 from the kelvins. The kelvin is the SI unit of temperature; 0 K is absolute zero and 0 °C is exactly 273.15 K. The Celsius scale puts water's freezing point at 0 °C and boiling at 100 °C at sea level. The two scales use the same size of degree, so only the zero point moves; there is no multiplication.
Worked examples
- 273.15 kelvins = 0 °C (273.15 − 273.15 = 0 °C)
- 300 kelvins = 26.85 °C (300 − 273.15 = 26.85 °C)
- 1,000 kelvins = 726.85 °C (1,000 − 273.15 = 726.85 °C)
Where this conversion comes up
Kelvins are used for science, color temperature of light bulbs and cameras; degrees Celsius for weather and cooking outside the US. Subtract 273.15: 300 K is 26.85 °C and 77 K, the boiling point of liquid nitrogen, is −196.15 °C. The size of a degree is the same on both scales; only the zero point moves.
Quick estimate
Subtract 273 (exact: 273.15).
Common mistakes
- Writing a degree sign. Kelvins are written as K, not °K, and never go below 0 K.
- Rounding the offset. Use 273.15 exactly; rounding it to 273 shifts every result by 0.15 degrees.
