Minutes to Seconds Converter

How to convert minutes to seconds

1 minute = 60 seconds. To convert minutes to seconds, multiply by 60. A minute is 60 seconds. The second is the SI base unit of time, defined by the cesium-133 transition.

Worked examples

• 2.5 minutes = 150 s (2.5 × 60)
• 15 minutes = 900 s (15 × 60)
• 90 minutes = 5,400 s (90 × 60)

Where this conversion comes up

Minutes are used for cooking, workouts, meetings and travel times; seconds for stopwatches, video timing and physics. For timers, HIIT intervals and video editing. Multiply by 60: 2.5 min is 150 s and 90 min (a football match) is 5,400 s.

Quick estimate

Multiply by 60; half a minute is 30 s.

Common mistakes

• Dividing instead of multiplying. A second is smaller than a minute, so the number of seconds must come out larger: 2.5 minutes = 150 s.
• Reading the remainder as a decimal. 1 h 30 min is 1.5 h, not 1.3 h: divide the leftover minutes by 60 (or seconds by 60) to get the decimal part.
