  • 16 tablespoons = 8 fl oz (16 รท 2)

Where this conversion comes up

Tablespoons are used for recipes, cooking oil and medicine; fluid ounces for drink cans, baby bottles, cosmetics and US recipes. Two tablespoons make one US fluid ounce, so 4 tbsp (1/4 cup) is 2 fl oz and 16 tbsp (1 cup) is 8 fl oz. This is a volume conversion; a tablespoon of butter weighs about 0.5 oz but a tablespoon of flour only 0.28 oz.

Quick estimate

Divide by 2.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying instead of dividing. A fluid ounce is larger than a tablespoon, so the number of fluid ounces must come out smaller: 2 tablespoons = 1 fl oz.
  • Mixing fluid ounces with weight ounces. A fluid ounce is a volume (29.57 ml); an ounce on a kitchen scale is a weight (28.35 g). A cup of flour is 8 fl oz by volume but only about 4.25 oz by weight.
  • Using the imperial (UK) unit. This page uses US measures. An imperial gallon is 4.546 L (20% more than a US gallon), an imperial pint 568 ml and an imperial fluid ounce 28.41 ml.
