Where this conversion comes up
Teaspoons are used for baking, spices and liquid medicine; fluid ounces for drink cans, baby bottles, cosmetics and US recipes. Six teaspoons make one US fluid ounce (2 tbsp), so 24 tsp is 4 fl oz. For dry ingredients by weight the answer differs: a teaspoon of sugar weighs 0.15 oz, of salt 0.2 oz.
Quick estimate
Divide by 6.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying instead of dividing. A fluid ounce is larger than a teaspoon, so the number of fluid ounces must come out smaller: 3 teaspoons = 0.5 fl oz.
- Mixing fluid ounces with weight ounces. A fluid ounce is a volume (29.57 ml); an ounce on a kitchen scale is a weight (28.35 g). A cup of flour is 8 fl oz by volume but only about 4.25 oz by weight.
- Using the imperial (UK) unit. This page uses US measures. An imperial gallon is 4.546 L (20% more than a US gallon), an imperial pint 568 ml and an imperial fluid ounce 28.41 ml.
- Rounding too early. Keep the full factor until the last step; rounding 0.167 to 0.17 first puts large values noticeably off.
