Updated October 29, 2026 · How we check facts

The mile (mi) is the unit used for road distances in the US and UK. The statute mile is 5,280 feet or 1,760 yards, and NIST lists it as exactly 1,609.344 meters (1.609344 km). The US customary system uses it alongside the foot, yard and inch.

Conversion

km = miles × 1.609344
miles = km ÷ 1.609344
feet = miles × 5280

Example

A 10 km run is 10 ÷ 1.609344 = 6.21 miles, or 52,800 feet for exactly 10 miles. A road sign reading 30 miles is 30 × 1.609344 = 48.28 km.
