How to convert kilobytes to megabytes
1 kilobyte = 0.001 megabytes. To convert kilobytes to megabytes, divide by 1,000 (or multiply by 0.001). A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes under the SI definition (a kibibyte, KiB, is 1,024 bytes). A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes under the SI definition (a mebibyte, MiB, is 1,048,576 bytes).

Where this conversion comes up
Kilobytes are used for small documents, icons and email attachments; megabytes for photos, songs, app downloads and data plans. Using SI prefixes, 1,000 KB make a megabyte, so a 500 KB photo is 0.5 MB. Windows and many apps count in binary (1,024 KB per MB), which is why 1,024 KB shows as exactly 1 MB there; the result shows both.

Common mistakes
- Multiplying instead of dividing. A megabyte is larger than a kilobyte, so the number of megabytes must come out smaller: 500 kilobytes = 0.5 MB.
- Mixing decimal and binary units. Drive makers and this page use 1,000-based (SI) units; Windows reports 1,024-based sizes, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. The result box shows both.
