1 megabyte = 0.001 gigabytes. To convert megabytes to gigabytes, divide by 1,000 (or multiply by 0.001). A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes under the SI definition (a mebibyte, MiB, is 1,048,576 bytes). A gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes under the SI definition (a gibibyte, GiB, is 1,073,741,824 bytes).

Where this conversion comes up
Megabytes are used for photos, songs, app downloads and data plans; gigabytes for phone storage, RAM, games and mobile data plans. 1,000 MB is one gigabyte in SI terms, so a 1.5 GB download is 1,500 MB. In binary (what Windows and older phone menus use) a gigabyte is 1,024 MB, which is why a '1 GB' plan may show as 1,024 MB.

Common mistakes
- Multiplying instead of dividing. A gigabyte is larger than a megabyte, so the number of gigabytes must come out smaller: 500 megabytes = 0.5 GB.
- Mixing decimal and binary units. Drive makers and this page use 1,000-based (SI) units; Windows reports 1,024-based sizes, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. The result box shows both.
