How to convert milliseconds to seconds
1 millisecond = 0.001 seconds. To convert milliseconds to seconds, divide by 1,000 (or multiply by 0.001). A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. The second is the SI base unit of time, defined by the cesium-133 transition.
Worked examples
- 250 milliseconds = 0.25 s (250 ÷ 1,000)
- 1,000 milliseconds = 1 s (1,000 ÷ 1,000)
- 5,000 milliseconds = 5 s (5,000 ÷ 1,000)
Where this conversion comes up
Milliseconds are used for page load times, ping, audio delay and code timing; seconds for stopwatches, video timing and physics. Page load times, API latency, ping, animation durations and timeouts in code are usually written in milliseconds. 1,000 ms is one second, so a 250 ms response is a quarter of a second and a 30,000 ms timeout is 30 seconds.
Quick estimate
Divide by 1,000: move the decimal point three places to the left.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying instead of dividing. A second is larger than a millisecond, so the number of seconds must come out smaller: 250 milliseconds = 0.25 s.
- Reading the remainder as a decimal. 1 h 30 min is 1.5 h, not 1.3 h: divide the leftover minutes by 60 (or seconds by 60) to get the decimal part.

How do you convert milliseconds to seconds?
Multiply the milliseconds by 0.001 (or divide by 1,000). For example, 1,000 milliseconds is 1 seconds.
How many seconds are in one millisecond?
One millisecond is 0.001 seconds. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second.
What is 5,000 milliseconds in seconds?
5,000 milliseconds is 5 seconds.
Is there a quick way to estimate milliseconds to seconds?
Divide by 1,000: move the decimal point three places to the left.
