Key takeaways

  • One liter is 33.814 US fluid ounces; multiply liters by 33.814 to get fluid ounces.
  • To convert US fluid ounces to liters, multiply by 0.02957 or divide by 33.814.
  • One liter is 35.195 imperial (UK) fluid ounces, because the imperial fluid ounce is smaller (28.41 mL).
  • US nutrition labels define 1 fl oz as 30 mL (21 CFR 101.9), so a liter shows as about 33 fl oz on a label.
  • These figures are for fluid ounces (volume); a liter of water weighs about 1 kg, but ounces of weight need a density.

One liter is 33.81 US fluid ounces. NIST gives the US fluid ounce as 29.57353 mL, so liters × 33.814 gives fluid ounces and fluid ounces × 0.02957 gives liters. A 2-liter bottle is 67.63 fl oz, and a 500 mL bottle is 16.91 fl oz. In the UK, a liter is 35.20 imperial fluid ounces.

How many ounces are in a liter?

A liter is 1,000 mL. The US fluid ounce is 29.57353 mL (NIST SP 811), so 1,000 ÷ 29.57353 = 33.814 fl oz. The imperial fluid ounce is 28.41306 mL, which gives 1,000 ÷ 28.41306 = 35.195 imperial fl oz per liter. Both are volumes, not weights; see ounces in a cup for the distinction.

Formulas

US fl oz = liters × 33.814
liters = US fl oz × 0.029574   (or ÷ 33.814)
imperial fl oz = liters × 35.195

Worked examples

Example 1: a 2-liter bottle

A 2 L bottle holds 2 ÷ 0.0295735 = 67.63 fl oz. In US customary cups (236.588 mL each) that is 2,000 ÷ 236.588 = 8.45 cups.

Example 2: a daily water goal

A goal of 64 fl oz is 64 × 29.57353 = 1,892.7 mL, or 1.89 L. A goal of 3 L is 101.4 fl oz, which is 0.79 gal (see liters in a gallon).

Example 3: a 330 mL can

A 330 mL can is 330 ÷ 29.57353 = 11.16 fl oz. A 12 fl oz can is 354.9 mL, 7.5% more than 330 mL.

Example 4: the label rule

Under 21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii), 1 fl oz means 30 mL on a nutrition label. A 1 L drink therefore reads as 1,000 ÷ 30 = 33.3 fl oz on a label, while the true value is 33.8 fl oz. The label figure is 1.4% lower (30 ÷ 29.57353 = 1.014).

Example 5: an imperial pint

Twenty imperial fluid ounces are 20 × 28.41306 = 568.3 mL, which is only 19.2 US fluid ounces (568.26 ÷ 29.57353). The same volume gives a different ounce count under each system.

Is a liter more than a quart?

Yes. A US liquid quart is 0.9463529 L (NIST), so 1 L = 1.0567 quarts, about 5.7% more. A liter is also 4.23 US cups (1,000 ÷ 236.588). Pints, quarts and gallons are laid out in ounces in a gallon, and liters to quarts converts any amount.

Quick ways to remember

  • 1 L is about 34 fl oz (33.8 exactly).
  • 500 mL is about 17 fl oz, and 2 L is about 68 fl oz.
  • Labels round: a drink shown as "33.8 fl oz" is exactly a liter; "33 fl oz" or "34 fl oz" is usually rounding.
  • US and UK ounces differ by 4% (29.57 vs 28.41 mL). The metric vs imperial guide lists other differences.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces are in half a liter?

16.91 US fluid ounces, since 0.5 ÷ 0.0295735 = 16.907. A 500 mL bottle is therefore a little over 16.9 fl oz.

How many 16 oz bottles make a liter?

A liter is 33.81 fl oz, so it takes 2.11 bottles of 16 fl oz.

Is a liter more than a quart?

Yes. A US liquid quart is 0.9463 liters, so a liter is about 5.7% larger (1.057 quarts).

How many ounces are in 2 liters?

67.63 US fluid ounces, which is 8.45 US cups.

Are fluid ounces the same as ounces?

No. Fluid ounces measure volume and ounces measure weight. Water happens to weigh about 1.04 oz per fluid ounce, but other liquids differ.

Key terms

Glossary →
Fluid Ounce (fl oz)
A fluid ounce is a unit of volume; one US fluid ounce is 29.57353 milliliters, and 8 of them make a US cup. It is not the same as the ounce used to weigh things.
Liter (L)
The liter is a metric unit of volume equal to one thousandth of a cubic meter (1,000 mL); about 33.81 US fluid ounces and 0.2642 US gallons.
Milliliter (mL)
The milliliter is one thousandth of a liter, or one cubic centimeter; a US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL and a US cup is 236.59 mL by NIST factors.
US Cup
The US customary cup is a unit of volume equal to 8 fluid ounces, 16 tablespoons or about 236.588 milliliters; US nutrition labels round it to 240 mL.
