The long ton is the traditional British ton: 2,240 pounds, or 20 hundredweight of 112 lb. NIST's SP 811 lists it as 1,016.047 kg, and it is mostly historical today. The name distinguishes it from the short ton of 2,000 lb.
Formula
long tons = pounds ÷ 2,240
kilograms = long tons × 1,016.0469
Example
A weight of 6,720 lb is 6,720 ÷ 2,240 = 3 long tons. The same weight is 3.36 short tons (6,720 ÷ 2,000) and 6,720 × 0.45359237 ÷ 1,000 = 3.05 metric tons.
Common mistakes
Assuming "ton" always means 2,000 lb. A long ton is 240 lb more than a short ton, a gap of 12%. See how many pounds in a ton.
