Updated October 31, 2026 · How we check facts

The short ton is the "ton" used in US trade for trucks, scrap, coal and freight. It weighs 2,000 pounds, or 32,000 ounces. NIST's SP 811 lists it as 907.1847 kg; since the pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, 2,000 lb is 907.18474 kg.

Formula

short tons = pounds ÷ 2,000
kilograms = short tons × 907.18474

Example

A load of 15,000 lb is 15,000 ÷ 2,000 = 7.5 short tons, or 15,000 × 0.45359237 = 6,803.9 kg, which is 6.80 metric tons.
