Updated October 29, 2026 · How we check facts

The meter (m) is the base unit of length in the International System of Units. One meter is 100 centimeters or 1,000 millimeters, and 1,000 meters make a kilometer. The US customary international foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 m, which ties the two systems together.

Conversion

ft = m ÷ 0.3048
in = m ÷ 0.0254
yd = m ÷ 0.9144

Example

A 2.4 m ceiling is 2.4 ÷ 0.3048 = 7.87 ft, or 2.4 ÷ 0.0254 = 94.5 inches. A 100 m sprint is 100 ÷ 0.9144 = 109.4 yards.

The guide how many feet in a meter has charts and height conversions; the converters meters to feet and meters to inches take any value.

Common mistakes

A meter is not a yard: it is 9.4% longer (1.0936 yd). For heights, convert the fractional part of a foot to inches separately; 1.75 m is 5.741 ft, which is 5 ft 8.9 in.
