Updated October 29, 2026 · How we check facts

The yard (yd) is a US customary and imperial unit of length. NIST lists it as exactly 0.9144 meters. It equals 3 feet of 0.3048 m (international foot) and 36 inches, and 1,760 yards make a statute mile.

Conversion

m = yd × 0.9144
yd = m ÷ 0.9144
ft = yd × 3

Example

A 100-yard field is 91.44 m. A 100 m track is 100 ÷ 0.9144 = 109.36 yd, so it is 9.36 yd longer. A mile is 1,760 × 0.9144 = 1,609.344 m.

Common mistakes

A yard (3 ft) is not a meter; the meter is 1.0936 yd. A square yard is 9 square feet, not 3.
