Also called: dry qt, dry quart

Updated November 3, 2026 · How we check facts

The US dry quart measures dry goods by volume, not liquids. NIST lists it separately from the US liquid quart: 1.101221 liters against 0.9463529 liters. The dry quart is 1.101221 ÷ 0.9463529 = 1.164 times the liquid quart. The imperial quart is larger still at 1.13652 L.

Example

A 1-dry-quart berry basket holds 1.101 L, which is 1.101 × 1.056688 = 1.164 liquid quarts. Recipes and cooking volumes use the liquid quart, as in how many liters in a quart.
