Minute (min)

Also called: min, minutes

Definition: The minute is a unit of time equal to exactly 60 seconds, one 60th of an hour. It is accepted for use with the SI, and a day has 1,440 of them.

Updated November 4, 2026 · How we check facts

The minute is 60 seconds, exactly (6.0 × 10¹ s in NIST's tables), and 60 minutes make an hour. A UTC minute can have 61 seconds when a leap second is added.

Formula

min = s ÷ 60 = h × 60

Example

A day has 24 × 60 = 1,440 minutes and a week 10,080. 2.5 hours is 2.5 × 60 = 150 minutes. Convert with minutes to hours or minutes to seconds.
